Fabric Bookmarks
Fabric bookmarks are a fun gift for your bookish friends and a great way to use up fabric scraps!
To make a 2” x 7” bookmark cut two pieces of fabric 2.5” x 7.5” - you will use a 1/4 inch seam allowance. It is super handy to have a cutting mat, ruler, and rotary cutter. If you don’t have these sewing tools you can use fabric scissors. I just picked up these sparkly pink Fiskars from my local craft store. You can find some fun scissors on Amazon as well.
You can mix and match your fabrics or stick with one fabric for both sides.
If you are making multiple bookmarks it is quickest to do all the cutting at one time.
When you are ready to sew, place right sides of the fabric together and stitch around the edges with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Leave an inch to two inches open so you can turn it inside out.
As I mentioned before, if you are making several bookmarks, sew all of them at the same time. If you are looking for a good sewing machine, I love Singer - probably because that’s the brand my mom had. If you want more information on sewing machines in order the pick the right machine for you, think about visiting JoAnn Fabrics and speaking with one of the professionals.
Clip the corners to reduce bulk and turn them inside out. Use something pointy to push out the corners. I used my loop turner which is handy when making straps as well. Once you finish making all the corners look nice, use your iron to press all the bookmarks making sure to fold in the opening.
You’re almost done! The next step is to top stitch around the edges. You’ll use an 1/8 inch stitch here. Backstitch at the beginning and end and voila! You have a handy bookmark for yourself or your friends!
These are a fun book club favor or a great gift paired with a favorite book or gift card to the local bookstore. Or, you can just make one for yourself!
