Don’t be a finisher!

For years and years we have been programmed to finish what we start. Here’s your plate of food, kid. Make a happy plate. There are starving kids in Africa. You wanted to try baseball… You made a commitment and have to finish the season. You started this book. Maybe it gets good at the end. You better finish it!

I’m telling you: Don’t be a finisher… At least when it comes to books. Books are like friends. When you meet a new person you either make a connection or you don’t. You want to spend time with them or you don’t. If you meet someone that you can’t stand you don’t make an effort to stay friends with that person. You move on. Some people may think said person is the greatest ever, but that doesn’t mean you have to like that person.

Like I said, books are like friends… Only spend time with the ones you like! There are so many books out there that will keep you engaged. Don’t slog through a book to see if it ends well. You have a finite amount of time on this earth. Choose to spend your reading hours in a way that makes you happy. You’re a smart cookie (which is another thing we could compare books to… although if you don’t like my peanut butter cookies we probably can’t be friends… and we made it full circle). You know this makes sense. In the grand scheme of things saying no to being friends with someone should be way harder than saying no to a book. So why is it so hard to put down a bad book?
